Wrangler Topless + GPCA Cargo Cover — The Freedom Pack Install Guide

The GPCA Cargo Cover PRO and its Freedom Pack variant are the brand's two most-installed Jeep products. The Freedom Pack's trick is that it stays installed even when you take the Jeep's top off — which is exactly when you most want your gear covered and secured. This guide covers the install sequence for JK and JL 4DR Wranglers, the three tie-down anchor points that carry the structural load, and the rain-sealing step most self-installers skip. Educational — not a replacement for the install manual shipped with the product.

What the Cargo Cover PRO + Freedom Pack actually does

Two product variants share the same core architecture:

• Cargo Cover PRO — a taut-fit heavy-canvas cover over the rear cargo area. Attaches to factory tie-down points. Hides gear from view, keeps dust off, provides a flat work surface on top of the cargo.
• Freedom Pack — same cargo cover, but with an additional top-off mode. Two outer flaps fold and lock down, allowing the Wrangler's removable top to come off while the cargo area stays covered and tensioned.

The Freedom Pack's value proposition is continuity: in stock configuration, most Jeep owners have to unload cargo every time they take the top off (or accept exposure + tie-downs every single trip). Freedom Pack decouples the two — cargo stays staged and covered; top comes off on demand.

Fitment — which variant for your truck

• JK 4DR (2007–2018) — standard PRO or Freedom Pack PRO variant.
• JK 2DR (2007–2018) — 2DR-specific variant (smaller footprint).
• JL 4DR (2018+) — standard PRO.
• JL 2DR (2018+) — 2DR-specific.
• JT Gladiator (2020+) — does NOT fit (Gladiator has a truck bed, not a Wrangler cargo area). GPCA does not ship Cargo Cover PRO for JT.
• 2024+ Wrangler — brand-stated compatible with existing PRO line (the 2024 refresh did not change cargo-area geometry — only the roll-bar airbag change, which affects handles but not covers).

The three anchor points that do 90% of the work

A Wrangler cargo cover under load (gear shifting during off-road driving, top-off wind at highway speed) is held in position by a handful of structural tie-down points. The Cargo Cover PRO distributes load across most of them, but three carry the majority:

1. Front-center tailgate mount — bolts to the factory C-pillar or rear-seat mount. This is the primary forward anchor.
2. Rear-left corner D-plate — the cover's rear-left tie-down anchor, usually routed through the factory cargo eye-bolt or the aftermarket tie-down anchor (GPCA's own D-plate product).
3. Rear-right corner D-plate — same as above, opposite side.

If these three are correctly installed and tensioned, the cover will hold tens of pounds of dynamic gear-shift load without walking. If one of them is misrouted or loose, the cover will eventually sag and the "tight-fit" aesthetic is lost within a few drives.

The install sequence (JL 4DR PRO, typical)

1. Clear the cargo area. Remove existing floor mats, subwoofers, cargo organizers. The cover needs factory eye-bolt access.
2. Install the front mount. Bolt the supplied front-edge attachment strap to the factory rear-seat mount point (a 13mm bolt with washer). Torque hand-tight plus a quarter-turn — don't over-torque into plastic trim.
3. Drape the cover over the cargo area with the rear edge hanging over the rear sill. Align the center seam with the rear-glass centerline.
4. Secure the rear corners. Run the rear-left and rear-right straps through the factory cargo eye-bolts (or through GPCA D-plates if you've upgraded). Tension each strap to remove slack — the cover should be taut, not sagging.
5. Freedom Pack only: fold the two outer top-off flaps and lock with the supplied cam-lock clips. In this configuration, the Wrangler's top can come off without disturbing the cargo cover.
6. Test. Push firmly down on the cover's center. It should flex ~1" and rebound — not sag indefinitely. If it sags, one of the three corner anchors is under-tensioned.

Total time: 15–25 minutes for a first install, 5–8 minutes once you know the routing.

The rain-sealing step most people skip

The Cargo Cover PRO is water-resistant, not waterproof. In heavy rain with the top on, water can seep through the seams over 20+ minutes of continuous downpour. This is not a defect — it's a canvas-cover reality.

The skip: after install, spray-seam-seal the cover's stitched edges. Scotchgard or Nikwax Tent & Gear Solarproof, applied to the inside-facing seams, pushes the water resistance from ~20 minutes of heavy rain to 2+ hours. Let the spray fully cure (24 hours) before first use after application.

Top-off driving in rain: the Freedom Pack cover shrugs off light rain indefinitely, but is not designed to replace a hardtop in a storm. If a downpour hits during a top-off drive, put the top back on.

Common install mistakes

• Installing on top of existing floor mats. The mats add bulk that the cover's dimensions don't account for. Remove them first; replace once the cover is set.
• Over-tensioning the rear straps. Too much tension pulls the front mount out of position and deforms the cover's shape. Tension until taut, not until guitar-string tight.
• Skipping the Freedom Pack cam-lock step. The two outer flaps need to lock before top removal — otherwise they flap in the wind once the top is off.
• Running straps through non-factory points. If your Jeep has aftermarket tie-downs, route through GPCA's D-plate accessory instead — the non-factory routing changes load geometry in a way that can loosen over time.
• Leaving wet cargo under the cover. Canvas traps moisture against fabric/wood/leather cargo. Open the cover after rainy drives to let the cargo area breathe.

Maintenance + long-term care

• Clean: Brush off dust and debris after off-road drives. For stubborn dirt, soap + water + soft brush. No pressure washer (blows seams apart over time).
• Re-seal annually: Reapply seam-seal spray once a year (or after any obvious water-resistance degradation).
• Winter storage: If you garage the Jeep for winter, the cargo cover can come off. Store flat (not folded) in a cool dry space to prevent crease-sets.
• Lifespan: 7–10 years of 4-season outdoor duty, per GPCA's product-page claim. Canvas degrades under UV; expect color fade before structural fail.

The quick version

• Cargo Cover PRO = cargo coverage with top on. Freedom Pack = same + top-off mode.
• Fits JK 2DR/4DR (2007–2018), JL 2DR/4DR (2018+). Does NOT fit Gladiator JT (different cargo architecture).
• Three structural anchor points: front-center + rear-left + rear-right. Get these right; the rest is cosmetic.
• Install time: 15–25 min first time, 5–8 min thereafter.
