GP-Grip PRO vs AIR vs Universal — Which Jeep Handle Fits Your Generation

In 2024, Jeep updated the Wrangler JL and Gladiator JT platforms with side-curtain airbags that deploy from the roll bar. The change is invisible from the outside but fundamentally breaks the compatibility of pre-2024 aftermarket grab handles — including the GP-Grip PRO that GPCA has shipped since 2015. The GP-Grip AIR, released specifically for the 2024+ generation, is the correct handle for the new trucks. Why the 2024 change matters

Jeep's Wrangler JL platform launched in 2018 with a standard dual-frontal-airbag system (FMVSS 208 compliant). In the 2024 model year update, Stellantis added side-curtain airbags integrated into the roll bar itself. The curtains deploy downward and outward when triggered.

This is the invisible compatibility break: a pre-2024 GP-Grip PRO mounts onto the roll bar in a way that doesn't account for the deployment path of a curtain airbag. In the unlikely but real scenario of a deployment event, the handle's mounting bracket could interfere with the airbag's arc. That's why GPCA released the GP-Grip AIR specifically for 2024+ — the geometry and mount design are revised to give the curtain a clear deployment path.

Rule of thumb: if your Jeep Wrangler is a 2024 or later model year, do not install a pre-2024 aftermarket roll-bar handle. This applies to any brand, not just GPCA — the airbag change is platform-wide.

The three GP-Grip variants

GP-Grip PRO / LITE / Foldable Color

Fits: Jeep Wrangler JK 2DR + 4DR (2007–2018), Jeep Wrangler JL 2DR + 4DR (2018–2023), Gladiator JT (2020–2023). Does not fit 2024+ Wrangler or Gladiator.

Material: Aero-grade aluminum (PRO and Foldable Color), cast aluminum (LITE).

Capacity: 250 lb load-rated, per GPCA specifications.

Install: Drill-free. Bolts onto roll bar through the factory side-bar mounting points. Typical install time 2 minutes per handle with a single 5mm Allen key.

Use case: Everyday grip for climbing in and out, passengers, kids, dogs jumping up. Load-rated for overland-grade use — tying down gear, hanging a jerrycan, clipping a dog leash.

GP-Grip AIR (Jeep 2024+ / Gladiator 2024+)

Fits: 2024+ Jeep Wrangler JL 2DR + 4DR, 2024+ Gladiator JT. Does not fit 2023 or earlier generations (the pre-2024 handles are the correct choice for those).

Material: Aero-grade aluminum with revised mount geometry for side-curtain-airbag clearance.

Patent status: GPCA publicly claims this design is patented specifically for airbag compatibility. Patent number not independently verified in public USPTO searches — treat as brand-stated.

Compliance: Brand-stated airbag-safe. This is not a third-party NHTSA or IIHS certification — it is GPCA's engineering claim that the handle's geometry and mount do not interfere with side-curtain airbag deployment. Real-world deployment testing has not been publicly disclosed.

Use case: Same everyday-grip function as the PRO, adapted for the new platform. Same 250 lb capacity.

GP-Grip Universal

Fits: Roll bars and tubes with outer diameters between 0.75" and 5.5". Covers UTV, ATV, boat rails, golf cart cages, and heavily-modified Jeeps where the factory roll bar has been replaced with a wider-diameter cage.

Material: Cast aluminum + fiber-reinforced mounting.

Install: Clamps around the bar; works on non-Jeep platforms. Does not use Jeep-specific side-bar mount points.

Use case: Non-Jeep vehicles, heavily modified Jeeps, and anyone whose roll cage replaced the factory bar with a different diameter. Not the right choice for a stock Jeep — the platform-specific PRO or AIR gives a tighter factory-fit.

The capacity question

All three GP-Grip variants are brand-stated as 250 lb load-rated. That means they'll hold a 250-lb passenger pulling up on them — the intended use case. It does not mean they're climbing-rope-rated. Specifically:

• Not rated for: Climbing rope attachments, tow-strap anchor points, rock-crawling recovery points. Use the tie-down anchor line for actual tie-down loads.
• Rated for: Passenger grab-and-pull during entry/exit, clipping gear-organizer straps, hanging medium-weight items (jerrycan, cooler handle, small duffel), dog-leash anchor for a dog under 80 lb.

Install sequence (GP-Grip PRO on JL Wrangler, typical)

1. Remove the factory hand loops (they're riveted to the vehicle's side-bar mount point with a single 5mm bolt). Retain the bolt.
2. Position the GP-Grip bracket at the desired height on the roll bar. The foldable-color variant has a cam-lock that lets you clock the orientation.
3. Thread the supplied longer bolt through the bracket and into the factory mount point. Torque to GPCA-specified spec (8–12 Nm per their install doc).
4. Repeat on the opposite side for passenger-front, and again for the rear two positions on 4DR.
5. Total time: 2 minutes per handle × 4 handles = ~8 minutes for a full 4DR install.

No drilling, no trim removal, no wiring. If your install requires any of those, you bought the wrong handle for your generation.

The mistakes people make

• Installing a pre-2024 handle on a 2024 Jeep. The airbag-compatibility issue is the single most important fitment rule.
• Buying the Universal for a stock Jeep. The platform-specific PRO gives a much tighter factory-fit. Universal is for modified vehicles with non-standard roll-bar diameters.
• Using the handle as a tow point. 250 lb is passenger-grip rating, not recovery rating. Use tie-down anchors for tow loads.
• Over-torquing the mount bolt. The factory side-bar mount isn't structural in the way a frame rail is. Over-torque can deform the bracket and loosen over time. 8–12 Nm is the spec.
