What Causes Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is inflammation of the plantar fascia — the thick band of connective tissue that runs from the heel bone to the toes across the bottom of the foot. It's the most common foot pain condition, affecting approximately 2 million people annually in the US.
The condition typically results from excessive strain on the fascia, which can come from flat feet or high arches (both create abnormal stress distribution), prolonged standing or walking on hard surfaces, unsupportive footwear, or sudden increases in activity level. The classic symptom is sharp heel pain at the first steps of the morning, when the fascia is tight from overnight rest and then suddenly stretched under body weight.
How Arch Support Addresses the Mechanism
The plantar fascia is designed to function as a tension cable that stiffens the foot under load — supporting the arch and transmitting force from heel to toe. When the arch collapses more than it should under body weight (either because of structural flat-footedness or fatigued foot muscles), the fascia is stretched beyond its optimal range and develops micro-tears that trigger inflammation.
Arch support insoles work by maintaining the arch under load, reducing the amount of fascial stretch per step. This doesn't eliminate the condition, but it reduces the repetitive stress that prevents the fascia from healing. Combined with stretching, rest, and appropriate shoe selection, arch support is one of the primary conservative treatments recommended by podiatrists.
Choosing Arch Support for Plantar Fasciitis
Podiatric literature generally recommends structured arch support (not just cushioning) for plantar fasciitis. The critical distinction is between cushioning insoles (which absorb impact but don't prevent arch collapse) and structured arch support insoles (which hold the arch position under load). Fulton's cork insoles are designed with the latter in mind — maintaining arch position through the contact cycle rather than simply softening impact.
For severe plantar fasciitis, a podiatrist-prescribed custom orthotic is the most precisely fitted option. For mild to moderate cases and prevention, quality structured insoles like Fulton's cork designs address the arch mechanics that the condition stems from.
