What Are Silkies?
Silkies — known in military culture as "Ranger Panties" or "Ranger Shorts" — are the 5-inch inseam nylon PT shorts that have become one of the most recognizable symbols of military fitness culture. Originally issued as physical training gear, they're now worn with deliberate pride across the military community and civilian fitness scene.
The Origin of the "Ranger Panties" Name
The nickname "Ranger Panties" originated partly as mockery — units not in Ranger-affiliated training would tease those who wore the short shorts as looking like they were in their underwear. The name stuck not despite the mockery but because of it. Wearing Silkies became an act of confidence — a visible signal of not caring what anyone thought of your PT gear.
The culture spread from Ranger-affiliated units across the Army and then into other services, the CrossFit community, and eventually mainstream fitness culture. The short inseam offers genuine performance advantages: unrestricted hip flexion for running and squatting, faster drying than standard PT shorts, and minimal material that doesn't bunch during explosive movements.

Beyond the culture, Silkies have actual athletic advantages:
- 5-inch inseam — full hip range of motion without restriction for sprinting, squatting, lunging, or climbing
- Lightweight nylon — dries faster than cotton or polyester PT shorts; critical in humid climates or during high-volume sweat training
- Minimal material — no bunching, chafing at the hem, or excess fabric interfering with movement
- Multipurpose — worn for PT, worn at the beach, worn around the barracks; the "wear everywhere" PT short
Wearing Silkies Civilian
The Silkies tradition has crossed heavily into civilian fitness culture, particularly in CrossFit, running, and veteran community spaces. Wearing them is simultaneously a performance choice (maximum mobility, minimum weight) and a cultural signal — identifying someone who's been in the military or who at least knows what the shorts mean.
