Whipped tallow balm is deceptively simple — scoop, warm, apply — but there are a handful of small techniques that separate "nice jar" from "skincare I'll reach for every day for a year." Here's the complete daily routine, morning through night, for getting the most out of a Pure Good balm.
Before you start: one small tool
Tallow melts on skin contact but it's a stiff solid at room temperature. The small tallow-scoop trick: use the back of a clean teaspoon to shave a thin curl off the top of the jar, then warm it briefly between your fingertips before applying. A pea-sized amount covers most of the face; a pea-and-a-half covers face + neck.
Morning routine (3 minutes)
1. Cleanse with water only (or a gentle cleanser)
Tallow doesn't need a stripped skin surface to absorb. A splash of cool water is usually enough in the morning; if you prefer a cleanser, avoid anything with sulfates or harsh actives. Pat — don't rub — dry.
2. Apply the Fresh Citrus Burst for the morning lift
Our Fresh Citrus Burst Tallow Balm has citrus essential oils with vitamin-C-adjacent properties. It's our go-to morning balm because the scent is lifting and the oils play well under makeup or sunscreen.
Warm a pea-sized amount between your fingertips until it's liquid-clear. Press — don't rub — onto forehead, cheeks, nose, chin. Let it absorb for about 60 seconds before anything else goes on top.
3. Layer vitamin C if you want brightening
If you're using our Vitamin C Serum (tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate), apply 3–4 drops after the tallow balm. Here's why: the tallow acts as a lipid delivery layer, and THC-A is a lipid-soluble form of vitamin C. They play well together.
If you're using a traditional water-based serum (L-ascorbic acid, for example), apply it before the tallow. The rule is: water-based goes first, oil-based goes last.
4. SPF (always, always)
Tallow is not sunscreen. It's barrier repair. For UV cover, put a mineral SPF on top after the tallow has absorbed. The tallow will not interfere with the SPF's photoprotection.
Daytime touch-ups
This is where the Face & Body Tallow Stick earns its spot in your bag. Same citrus-vitamin-C blend as the Fresh Citrus Burst but in a twist-up tube — perfect for dry cuticles, elbows, collarbone, dry spots after you've been inside AC all afternoon. No scooping, no fingertip-warming, no mess.
For lip upkeep, the Jumbo Tallow Lip Balm is the workhorse. A quick glide once or twice through the afternoon keeps lips soft without needing to reapply every 30 minutes the way drug-store balms do.
Evening routine (5 minutes)
1. Double-cleanse if you wore SPF or makeup
First pass: an oil cleanser or micellar water to break down the SPF/makeup. Second pass: a gentle cleanser to take off the first pass. Tallow's barrier-repair benefit is fully lost if there's SPF film left on skin.
2. Apply the Lavender Balm (or Revival, if anti-age)
Evenings are for the calming balms. Lavender Tallow Balm if you want skin-calming (red, stressed, post-sun). Revival Tallow Balm if you're targeting fine lines and looking for the anti-age blend.
Same technique: pea-sized, warm between fingertips, press — don't rub — into face and neck. If you're doing the "overnight mask" version, go a full pea-and-a-half on the dry spots (cheeks, jawline) and sleep on a cotton pillowcase.
3. Body, if needed
Areas that always get dry overnight (elbows, knees, collarbone, ankles): a small scoop of any of our unscented or cozy scented balms. The Almond + Vanilla Tallow Balm is the evening-body favorite — warm, soft, not cloying, won't fight with your partner's pillow.
The weekly deep treatment
Once a week, usually Sunday: a thick mask-layer of the Revival Balm on face and neck. Half an hour while you do something else. Wipe off the excess with a warm washcloth (don't strip it — leave a light residue). The next morning, skin reads noticeably plumper.
The "mask mode" works because whipped tallow is a single-phase fat. You can pile it on without the water-content issues of a cream.
The rules (short version)
- Warm it first. Tallow works when it's liquid. Cold tallow + cold skin = drag.
- Less is more. Pea-sized, not thumbnail-sized. You can always add more.
- Water-based goes first, oil-based goes last. The classic layering rule still applies.
- Give it 60 seconds. Before SPF, before makeup, before anything. Tallow absorbs; it just needs a minute.
- Store it away from heat. Tallow doesn't spoil, but it will re-melt and re-set grainy if it gets too warm. Drawer is fine; sunny bathroom shelf is not.
