Why Care Matters
Designer sunglasses are precision optical instruments with multiple lens coatings — UV filter, polarization film, anti-reflective treatment, sometimes hydrophobic coating. These coatings are durable but can be damaged by improper cleaning, harsh chemicals, or aggressive wear. A well-maintained pair of OHO's lasts 3-5 years; a neglected pair shows lens degradation within 12 months.
Daily Cleaning
Rinse first, then wipe. Rinse the lenses under cool water before wiping — this removes abrasive dust particles that would otherwise scratch the lens during wiping. Use a microfiber cloth (the kind that comes with the sunglasses). Never use paper tissues, paper towels, or shirts — paper fibers and shirt fabrics contain microscopic abrasives that scratch lens coatings over time.
For oils and fingerprints: A drop of dish soap (alcohol-free) on the lens, gentle finger-rub, rinse, microfiber dry. Avoid Windex, ammonia-based cleaners, or alcohol — these strip anti-reflective coatings.
Storage
Always store sunglasses in a hard case when not on your face. The case protects from accidental crushing in a bag, and prevents lens contact with abrasive surfaces. Avoid storing in hot cars — interior temperatures above 140°F can warp lens coatings and damage the polarization film over time.
Handling Habits
Remove sunglasses with both hands to prevent uneven frame stress. Don't push them onto your head as a hairband — this stretches the frame and can damage hinges over time. Keep them away from sunscreen (lotion can streak coatings) and saltwater (rinse immediately if splashed).
When to Replace
Signs your sunglasses need replacement: visible scratches in the central vision area (don't risk eye strain), warped frame that won't sit level on your face, faded or worn lens coating (rainbow patterns appearing on the lens surface), or loose hinges that no longer hold the frame open. A pair of OHO's properly maintained should last 3-5 years of regular use before any of these signs appear.
