UV-400 rated sunglasses block 100% of ultraviolet radiation up to 400 nanometers — covering both UV-A (causing long-term retinal damage and cataracts) and UV-B (causing acute eye sunburn and contributing to macular degeneration). Polarization is a separate lens treatment that filters horizontally-polarized light reflected off water, snow, and car hoods — eliminating glare without darkening the overall view.
