The Judo Belt System: Colors, Ranks & What Each Belt Represents

The judo belt system is one of the most recognized rank structures in martial arts. Unlike some styles that use dozens of belt colors, judo's kyu and dan system is structured, intentional, and globally standardized under the IJF. Here's the complete breakdown.

The Kyu System: Colored Belts

Kyu grades move from highest number (beginner) downward toward first kyu (advanced). Belt colors vary slightly by country and federation, but the standard IJF-aligned progression is:

  • White — 6th Kyu (beginner)
  • Yellow — 5th Kyu
  • Orange — 4th Kyu
  • Green — 3rd Kyu
  • Blue — 2nd Kyu
  • Brown — 1st Kyu

The Colored Belts set from Judo Gear USA covers the full kyu range — appropriate for club use, promotions, and replacing worn belts at any rank.

The Dan System: Black Belt Grades

After 1st Kyu, a judoka tests for Shodan (1st Dan) — the first black belt grade. The dan system continues through 10th Dan (historically awarded to Judo founders and legendary contributors). Most competitive judoka reach 3rd to 5th Dan in their lifetime of practice.

Belt Care and Replacement

Judo belts are worn and tied thousands of times over years of practice. Quality matters: the Black Belt Elite and Black Belt IJF Approved from Judo Gear USA use reinforced construction designed for the wear patterns of regular randori and uchikomi use.
