IJF Approval Explained: What It Means for Your Judogi and Belt

The IJF (International Judo Federation) sets the global standard for judo equipment used in official competition. For a judogi to be used at IJF-sanctioned events — from club-level tournaments to World Championships — it must pass specific criteria. Here's what IJF approval actually means and how to identify it.

What IJF Approval Covers

IJF judogi specifications cover:

  • Fabric weight and weave structure — minimum density for grip resistance during competition
  • Sleeve length — must reach within a set range of the wrist when arm is extended
  • Lapel thickness — standardized for consistent grip width across competitors
  • Jacket length — must cover the hips when standing
  • Color — white for one competitor, blue for the other (or both white at certain events)

IJF Champion 2 vs. Champion 3

Both carry full IJF approval, but the Champion 3 is the current flagship — updated construction with tighter weave and improved durability over the Champion 2. The Champion 3 comes in Regular Cut (more room through the shoulder and chest) and Slim Fit (narrower through the torso, preferred by lightweight and medium-weight competitors).
