How to Care for Competition Dance Costumes: Keep Your Ruffle Set Performance-Ready

Why Dance Costume Care Matters

Competition dance costumes are investments. Custom or limited edition pieces cost significantly more than standard activewear, and they need to maintain their appearance through multiple performances — potentially dozens of rehearsals and several competition appearances. Proper care extends the life of the garment and keeps it looking stage-ready throughout the competition season.

Washing Guidelines

Hand wash is always safest. Machine washing can damage ruffles, stones, and metallic elements that are common in competition costumes. If hand washing isn't practical, use the delicate cycle in a mesh laundry bag with cold water.

Use a gentle detergent designed for delicate fabrics. Avoid fabric softener — it can break down the fibers in stretch fabrics over time and affect how the costume holds its shape.

Ruffle Care

Ruffles are the most delicate part of a ruffle set. The gather stitching and multiple layers of ruffle fabric can hold moisture and lose their shape if washed and stored incorrectly. After washing, gently reshape ruffles by hand while damp and hang or lay flat to dry rather than using a dryer. Pressing with a low-heat iron can restore ruffle shape if they've flattened.

Storage

Store competition costumes hanging (not folded) to prevent permanent crease lines in the fabric and to maintain ruffle structure. Use a garment bag to protect from dust. For out-of-season storage, clean the costume first — body oil and sweat left in fabric long-term accelerates fiber breakdown.

Pre-Competition Check

Before each competition, check stones and embellishments for loose pieces — a missing stone or stone that comes loose during performance creates a distraction and a slip hazard. Check seams for signs of stress from intense movement. Steam (never iron directly on stones or metallic elements) can refresh appearance and remove storage wrinkles.
