The Windshield Doesn't Block Everything
Most people assume a car windshield provides full sun protection. It doesn't. Laminated windshield glass blocks nearly all UV-B radiation — the rays responsible for sunburn — but allows approximately 75% of UV-A radiation to pass through. UV-A penetrates glass, penetrates cloud cover, and penetrates deeper into skin than UV-B.
UV-A is primarily responsible for photoaging — the wrinkles, sunspots, and texture changes that develop on chronically sun-exposed skin. It also contributes to DNA damage and elevated skin cancer risk. And because UV-A doesn't cause immediate redness or sunburn, most people driving daily don't feel the exposure accumulating.
The Driver's Hand Asymmetry Problem
Dermatological literature documents higher rates of UV-A-related damage on the left hand of left-hand-drive vehicle drivers (the US, UK, Australia). Left hands rest near the window, receiving direct UV-A through the glass, while right hands are typically positioned lower on the wheel or away from the window. Over 20–30 years of daily driving, this asymmetry becomes visible as accelerated aging on the window-side hand.
A 2012 case report in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology documented a 69-year-old truck driver with severe unilateral photoaging on his left arm and hand — the side exposed to the driver's window over decades. The case sparked increased awareness of occupational driver UV-A exposure.
Simple Fix: Sun Gloves in the Glovebox
PalmFree™ UPF 50+ gloves weigh under 40g and fold flat. Keep them in the center console or glovebox and put them on before long drives — particularly morning or afternoon drives when sun angle is most direct. The fingerless design means no grip issues on the steering wheel, no interference with phone or radio controls, no discomfort over long drives.
For rideshare drivers, delivery drivers, commuters, and anyone who drives 30+ minutes daily, sun gloves are the lowest-friction UV protection available for hands.
