Hydroxytyrosol is the polyphenol that made olive oil famous among researchers. It is one of the most potent natural antioxidants ever measured — and the only olive compound with its own authorized EU health claim.
Why researchers keep coming back to it
Hydroxytyrosol is small, water- and fat-soluble, and highly bioavailable. The research literature has focused on cardiovascular health, protection of LDL particles from oxidative damage, and cellular antioxidant defense. That LDL-protection effect is the basis of the EFSA claim recognized in EU Regulation 432/2012 — the benchmark serious olive oil brands measure themselves against.
Where you actually get it
- Early-harvest high phenolic EVOO. Concentrations vary wildly between bottles — which is why lab numbers matter. Olivea Ultra High Phenolic EVOO is verified at 1,000+ mg/kg total polyphenols each harvest, naturally rich in hydroxytyrosol and its precursors.
- Olives and olive leaf — real but modest amounts, and brine-cured table olives lose much of theirs.
- A dedicated supplement. The Olivea Hydroxytyrosol Supplement concentrates the compound into one clean daily serving — useful for travel or for pairing with a standard EVOO.
Hitting the 5 mg benchmark
Five milligrams of hydroxytyrosol and derivatives per day is the EFSA reference point. With ordinary supermarket EVOO you'd need to drink implausible quantities to reach it. With a verified oil it's one morning tablespoon — see our olive oil shot guide — or a capsule with breakfast.
