A well-cared-for felt cowboy hat will last for years — even decades. A neglected one loses its shape and finish within a season. These are the essentials for keeping your GIGI PIP felt hat in shape.
Handling: Always by the Brim, Not the Crown
The most common mistake with cowboy hats is picking them up by the crown. The crown is the most structurally vulnerable area — oils from your fingers, pressure from gripping, and repeated handling will distort its shape over time. Pick up the hat by the brim instead, from the front or sides.
Storage: Crown Down or on a Hat Stand
Store a felt hat either crown-down on a flat surface (which protects the brim from deforming) or on a proper hat stand. Hanging a felt hat from a hook by the brim — especially if the brim extends past the hook edge — will eventually cause the brim to curve or distort under its own weight.
Brushing: Counterclockwise Motion
Use a soft-bristled hat brush to remove dust and debris. Brush in a counterclockwise direction when viewed from above — this follows the natural nap of the felt and lifts dirt out rather than pushing it in. Regular brushing (once or twice a week for daily-wear hats) maintains the felt's texture and prevents deep staining.
Rain and Moisture
Wool felt is naturally water-resistant for light rain — a sprinkle won't damage a quality felt hat. Heavy rain or soaking will. If your hat gets wet: shake out excess water (don't wring or squeeze), reshape the crown while damp, and allow to dry naturally in a well-ventilated area. Keep it away from direct heat (radiators, dryers) which will shrink and stiffen the felt.
Reshaping a Distorted Crown
Minor crown distortions can be corrected with steam. Hold the hat over a kettle or clothing steamer — the steam softens the felt fibers and allows gentle reshaping by hand. Work slowly and hold the shape until the felt cools and sets.
