Why Leather Tack Care Matters
Leather is a protein-based material that responds to moisture, temperature, and mechanical stress. Neglected leather dries out, cracks, and eventually fails — sometimes catastrophically, as in a girth cracking mid-ride. Well-maintained leather can last decades. A consistent saddle soap routine is the foundation of tack longevity.
Fiebing's Saddle Soap: The Industry Standard
Fiebing's has been making saddle soap since 1895. The Natural variety (in the 3.5oz tin) uses a soap-based formula that cleans dirt and sweat salts from leather while simultaneously conditioning with glycerin. Unlike oil treatments that condition without cleaning, saddle soap does both in one step. The natural formula is pH-appropriate for leather and leaves no darkening or residue when applied correctly.
Step-by-Step Cleaning Process
- Remove loose dirt: Wipe tack with a barely damp cloth or soft brush to remove surface dirt and dry sweat before applying saddle soap. Applying soap over heavy dirt dilutes it and reduces cleaning effectiveness.
- Prepare the soap: Use a damp (not wet) sponge on the Fiebing's tin. The soap should create a light lather on the sponge — excess water makes the soap runny and less effective. Ring out the sponge if it becomes too wet.
- Apply in sections: Work on one section at a time — one stirrup leather, one fender, one girth panel. Circular motion works the soap into the leather grain more effectively than straight strokes.
- Remove excess: Wipe any remaining saddle soap from the leather surface with a clean dry cloth. Soap left sitting on leather doesn't cause damage, but it creates a sticky surface that attracts dirt in the next use.
- Condition if needed: For leather that feels dry after cleaning, apply a separate leather conditioner (neatsfoot oil, leather conditioner cream) after the soap dries completely. Saddle soap has some conditioning effect but is primarily a cleaner.
Frequency
Clean tack after every 3-5 rides or whenever visible sweat salt (white crystalline residue) appears on leather. Full cleaning before major shows. Condition 2-3 times per year for regularly used tack. More frequently for tack used in wet or dusty conditions.
